International Conference on Genome Informatics in Singapore
Mail content from Dr. Limsoon Wang is posted below :-
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
18th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GENOME INFORMATICS (GIW2007)
http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~giw2007
The International Conference on Genome Informatics (GIW) is the longest
running international bioinformatics conference. The scope includes all work
that is ultimately devoted to the computational understanding of biological
systems on a molecular basis and the aims are to present recent results of
both theoretical and practical research, to show new applications, to
demonstrate systems, and to indicate directions of future research.
GIW was traditionally held in Japan. For 2007, it is the first time that GIW
is held outside of Japan. The School of Computing and the Bioinformatics
Programme at the National University of Singapore are honoured to jointly
host GIW 2007. We are delighted to give you a warm welcome to Singapore. An
exciting programme comprising 5 keynote addresses, 16 oral presentations of
accepted papers, and poster sessions awaits you.
GIW2007 will be held 3-5 December 2007 at the Biopolis, Singapore, back to
back with AASBi2007 (Annual Symposium of the Association of Asian Societies
for Bioinformatics, 2 December 2007) and LBM2007 (2nd International
Symposium on Languages for Biology and Medicine, 6-7 December 2007). There
will be a single registration process for all three meetings.
The registration is now open. You are cordially invited to register at
http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~giw2007/registration.html
We look forward to seeing you in Singapore!

Training on Taverna Workflow
Taverna Workshop: Workflow Environment for Bioinformatics
10-11 September 2007
sponsored by ThaiGrid project, Thai BioGrid
Venue: KU Home, Kasetsart University, Bang Khen campus, Bangkok, Thailand
Instructor: Dr. Kathy Wolstencroft, School of Computer Science, U of Manchester, UK
Day 1: 10 September 2007
1.. An introduction to Taverna and workflows
2.. Obtaining and installing Taverna and running simple examples
3.. Constructing simple workflows from remote and local components
4.. Running workflows, monitoring progress, obtaining and visualizing results
5.. Advanced exercises: Iteration, control flow, substituting services
6.. Spotlight on BioMart and BioMoby
7.. Understanding Shim services
8.. Reusing and sharing workflows - describing and publishing them in the myExperiment portal.
At the end of day 1, participants will be able to design and build workflows using some of the most common services and workflow design patterns.
This course is aimed at people with a bioinformatics or biological sciences background.
Day 2: 11 September 2007
The second day of the course will have a more technical focus, covering more of the advanced features of Taverna as well as the underlying technologies of distributed computing and web services. This course is aimed at people with a bioinformatics background or a computing background (and not laboratory biologists). Some programming experience will be needed to participate fully
1.. A basic introduction to web services and other services that can be used in Taverna
2.. Making your own services available in Taverna
3.. Beanshell scripting
4.. An introduction to java web services - how to write a simple service from scratch using Apache Axis and Tomcat
5.. Soaplab - wrapping command-line 'legacy' services, or groups of services
By the end of day 2, participants will be able to integrate their own (or new) services into Taverna either for incorporation into their own workflows, or for sharing with the community
Bring your own WiFi notebook. Need to install Java 5 in advance.
